Yes, I know we are all really anxious for winter to disappear and the snow to go with it! But just think, this give you more time to plan your garden and peruse the aisles of Agway.
We have lots of seeds and now have our summer bulbs. Such as Dahlias, Lilies, and Gladiolas. Our seed potatoes are out. And yes we have organic ones as well.
It is a good time to take stock of your tools. Make sure you have ones that are in good condition. Free of rust and debris. Clean your favorite clippers and loppers with denatured alcohol so as not to spread disease.
There are many options for starting plants early under lights. Seed starting mixes in bags that are the right mix to give those seedlings their best start. Heating mats help with germination, especially if you are starting them in a cooler room. It is important to have a light system on a timer. Most plants need at least 16 hours of light to germinate. Having those lights on a system that can be lowered and raised helps your seedlings from getting leggy. Start with the lights very close to the soil and raise just above the new sprouts as they grow.
Before you know it Spring will be here. In the meantime, maybe do some spring cleaning!
