Enthusiasm is a good trait to have, but in the spring after a long winter it can get gardeners into trouble! That first trip to a full greenhouse or nursery makes you want to scoop up plants and put them right in the ground. Resist my friend. Buy them up yes, but they need hardening off, before going in the ground. A big word for a simple thing.
“What is that?” you say. Take your new garden members home and put them outside during the day. Then bring into a garage or shed for the night. This will build up your plants, so they can survive out in the garden. Night temperatures should stay consistently at 40 degrees or above, before you plant. The warmer the soil the better start your plant will have.
The exception is cold crop vegetable plants, and perennials. These are spinach, lettuce, peas, broccoli, cabbage, etc. We have them all outside at the nursery as soon as they come in. So get started on those and plan your beds for the annuals.
But most of all, enjoy playing in the DIRT!!
